I’ve been suggesting to Josh that we had a party for Ivy’s first birthday for a few months now but it wasn’t until some of my family decided they would come and visit us last Saturday that he finally relented and said that we could have one.
I could see his point that she wasn’t even aware that it was her birthday and wouldn’t care if we had a party but a) party planning is one of my favourite ever things and b) it was more of a celebration that we had managed to keep her alive for a whole twelve months!
We had such a nice couple of celebratory days.
On Friday Ivy opened her presents in bed and we went out for lunch and then on Saturday it was party day! My parents and sisters, brother in law, niece and nephew came and we had food, presents, balloons and cake!
I’ve had mixed feelings about Ivy turning one. Having heard a lot of people express sadness that their children were growing up I expected it to feel more bitter sweet than it did. I do feel a little bit sad and reminiscent of her early days but mostly I’m just loving each new stage that she hits. Every day she interacts with us a bit more and makes us laugh all the time. Nearly everyone we meet says what a happy and calm baby she is and it makes it a joy to help her learn and grow.
Even though she won’t remember her first birthday I hope she’ll be able to look back on the photos one day and know that we threw her a party because we wanted to celebrate family and what a wonderful joy she is.
