DIY Gifts: Cross Stitch Canvas

I'm excited to introduce Lydia as a guest contributor to my DIY gifts series today. Lydia blogs over at Thoughts of a Librarian (in training) and loves crafting so I knew she would come up with something perfect!

When Rachel asked me to guest blog with a D.I.Y gift I had the perfect project in mind. In fact it was a project that I have been working on since last year. I really enjoy cross stitching but I never really know what project to attempt. So when I was asked to be a Godparent way back when last year I began a little stitching project that I have finally finished.

For inspiration I went through my vast collection of cross stitching magazines and came across some cute letters for kids. I decided to attempt stitching my Godson’s initials with slightly different colours then the ones suggested by the pattern!

I worked on the stitching over the course of the next few evenings. Once finished I had to decide what to do with the finished project.  This stalled me.
I had used a scrap piece of Aida to stitch on and as a result didn’t think I had enough fabric to frame unless I found a teeny tiny frame. Thankfully Pinterest came to my rescue by suggesting I mount it on a canvas. Again I didn’t really have enough fabric to cover even a small canvas so I improvised.

I bought a tiny canvas from a cheap local shop. Using my trusty staple gun I attached a beautiful green and blue piece of fabric to the canvas. I then ironed my cross stitch under two very thin tea towels as it had been in the frame for a while. Once ironed I then stitched the cross stitched piece in the centre of the canvas. Finally I took some brown ribbon to frame the piece on the canvas and also enable it to be hung if so desired.

My friend has finally seen the project but I have yet to actually send it to her. Hopefully I will be delivering it in person in May! My Godson has a big sister and I am hoping to start a similar girly version.

Thanks so much for sharing this Lydia! If you liked this you should head on over to Lydia's blog to see some of the other craft project's she's attempted {chalk board paint is involved!}.
