Peak District: Chatsworth House

IMG_9693
On our second full day in the Peak District we went to Pemberly to take tea with Mr Darcy.
What do you mean that was all in my mind? Spoil sports.
Even if you’ve never visited you’ll probably recognise Chatsworth House from the many period dramas and programmes that have been filmed there (Pride and Prejudice being one). It was on my list of things to do as soon as I knew we were going to the Peak District and I’m very grateful to the boys for indulging me even though I’m sure trudging around a stately home wasn’t their idea of the perfect day!

I had a really good day out and I’m glad we went, but I’ve got to be honest and just put it out there…it wasn’t as good as I was expecting.
It was huge and grand and beautiful, but the price tag was also rather staggering which kind of ruined it for me.
I understand that it’s still a private home and the cost of upkeep is huge but £15 for entry to the house and gardens PLUS £3 for parking seemed on the expensive side. You had to pay extra again for guide book or audio tour so I didn’t feel like we got that much of an understanding of the history of the place which is a shame as that’s normally my favourite part.
I basically just felt like they weren’t giving anything away for free. This was their family home and we were going to pay for the privilege of being there…which is fair enough I guess.

Anyway, enough of my moaning and onto some pretty pictures!

As I said, I’m really glad we made the trip and had the experience. Oh, how the other side live; can you imagine this being your home?!
Later we went for a lovely walk to a local landmark, but that’s a post for another day.

  7. I'd hate to live in a big house. They seem so imposing and cold. They're designed to impress guests not to welcome them.
